Decide How Much You Want: Each serving equals about 2/3 cup. 2 Servings: 2/3 cup water; 1 tbsp butter (or margarine or olive oil); 1/4 tsp salt (optional); 1/3 cup milk; 2/3 cup potato flakes. 4 Servings: 1-1/4 cups water; 2 tbsp butter (or margarine or olive oil); 1/2 tsp salt (optional); 2/3 cup milk; 1-1/3 cups potato flakes. 6 Servings: 1-3/4 cups water; 3 tbsp butter (or margarine or olive oil); 3/4 tsp salt (optional); 1 cup milk; 2 cups potato flakes. 12 Servings: 3-1/2 cups water; 6 tbsp butter (or margarine or olive oil); 1-1/4 tsp salt (optional); 2 cups milk; 4 cups potato flakes. About 20 Servings (Entire Box): 5-1/3 cups water; 10 tbsp butter (or margarine or olive oil); 2-1/2 tbsp salt (optional); 3-3/4 cups milk; entire box potato flakes. Stove-Top Directions: Heat up water, butter and salt to boiling in saucepan. Remove from heat. Stir in milk and potato flakes with fork until potatoes are desired consistency. Note: Prepare entire box recipe in a 4 to 6-quart stock pot oven and stir with a whisk. (Remember to refrigerate any leftovers). Microwave Directions: Combine water, butter, salt, milk and potato flakes in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave covered on high using the chart below. Remove and stir with fork until potatoes are desired consistency. 2 Servings: 2 to 2-1/2 mins microwave time. 4 Servings: 3 to 3-1/2 mins microwave time. 6 Servings: 4-1/2 to 5 mins microwave time. Note: Microwaving is not recommended for amounts over 6 servings. Make it Your Own! Extra Creamy Potatoes: Stir in additional milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency. Extra Firm Potatoes: Stir in a few more potato flakes. Extra Rich Potatoes: Substitute evaporated milk for milk. Prepare as directed, adding additional evaporated milk, if necessary, to reach desired consistency. Extra Flavorful Potatoes: Substitute chicken broth for water and omit salt. Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Substitute garlic salt for salt. Or, add a spoonful of garlic from a jar of diced garlic. Or, add one clove diced fresh garlic. Reduced-Fat Directions: Use skim milk and reduce butter amounts by half. The potatoes made with the reduced-fat directions contain 50% less fat than the regular directions. Reduced-Fat Directions: 3 g fat per serving. Regular Directions: 7 g fat per serving. Stir-In Ideas: cooked, crumbled bacon; sour cream; shredded cheddar cheese; grated parmesan cheese; corn kernels or peas; French fried onions; crumbled gorgonzola, feta or blue cheese; green chiles; roasted peppers.
